Civic Facility Saved: Mount Vernon Armory Gets $1M For Restoration
"The Mount Vernon Armory holds a special place in our city's history," the mayor said of the significance of the funding.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Mount Vernon facility that was a social and historic epicenter for community support will get new life.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard and NYS Assemblyman Pretlow announced on Thursday morning that the Mount Vernon Armory has received $1 million for restoration and revitalization.
The Mount Vernon Armory, located at 144 North Fifth Avenue, was designed by architect Isaac G. Perry, and constructed between 1888 to 1889. According to the state, the Armory hosted several regiments and companies between 1873 and 1961, when it was converted to a senior citizen center.

During the press conference, the mayor said that it has since been used for community events, including concerts, cultural events and social gatherings. While the Armory was closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was condemned in 2021. Patterson-Howard said there is an opportunity to explore adaptive re-use options for the Armory, such as being a multi-purpose facility hosting cultural events, art exhibitions, sport activities, a recreational/day center for seniors and afterschool programs, and possibly re-housing the Rose Simon program which was relocated to the Doles Center.
The city says that the Mount Vernon Armory holds immense cultural and architectural significance, representing a pivotal era in our nation's defense infrastructure. The funding will help preserve the armory's historical integrity and ensure its long-lasting contribution to the community, officials said.

The Mount Vernon Armory funding project is a collaborative effort between Mount Vernon and state representatives, the mayor said, reflecting their shared commitment to preserve historical landmarks and enhance the quality of life for all residents.
"Investing in the Mount Vernon Armory is an investment in the future of our community," Pretlow concurred. "The revitalization of this historical landmark will bring new life to Mount Vernon, attracting visitors, stimulating our economy, and creating a space for residents to come together."
