Mount Vernon, Yonkers Issue State Of Emergency Orders: Update

Mount Vernon and Yonkers have declared states of emergency.

Yonkers police asked residents to stay off the roads. Mount Vernon City Hall closed at 1 p.m. due to heavy downpours and flooding.

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said in her statement:

A State of Emergency is hereby declared in Mount Vernon, New York, effective at 11:45 a.m. on September 29, 2023, until further notice not to exceed five (5) days and may be rescinded or amended by a subsequent order.
This State of Emergency is declared due to hazardous weather events from heavy downpours resulting in localized urban flooding, poor drainage flooding, flash flooding, damage to private and public property and public infrastructure.
As Mayor of the City of Mount Vernon, New York, I Shawyn Patterson-Howard exercise the authority given me under New York State Executive Law, Article 2-B, to preserve the public health and hereby render all required and available assistance vital to the security, well-being, and health of the citizens of this municipality.
Furthermore, I hereby direct all departments and agencies of the City of Mount Vernon to take whatever steps necessary at all affected locations to protect life, property, and public infrastructure and to provide other such emergency assistance as deemed necessary.
