Mount Vernon's premier outdoor cultural festival is back with music, dance, food, shopping, and more!

The Wakanda Celebration is the event on everyone’s to-do list this September! Check out what to expect at the Wakanda Celebration taking place on September 4th:

Experience the Luangisa Wakanda Wearable Art Fashion Show

One of the major highlights of the Wakanda Celebration is the Luangisa Wakanda Wearable Art Show. The Luangisa African Gallery Fashion Collection features clothing and accessories that tell a story to represent African tradition, pride, and heritage. From ethically produced jewelry to magical patterns and textures to powerful colors and artisanally crafted hats, the Wakanda Wearable Art Experience showcases authentic African elegance and royalty. An African Live Band featuring PitsiRa The First, Lesedi Ntsane, Saidou Sangare, Ian Jesse, Fathi Tabaouche, and Yoli Zama will accompany the models as they showcase unique wearable art handmade by artisans in Africa. The Luangisa Wakanda Wearable Art Show starts at 5 pm. Don’t miss it!

In Africa, our culture and community are our biggest pride, and this celebration is designed to uplift and amplify this rich culture and community in the diaspora. From Afrogroove by Kaissa Doumbe to Afrofusion by Shantell Renee, African music’s diverse and vibrant nature will be fully displayed during the Celebration. So, bring your dancing shoes or no shoes at all as we bask in the joy and celebrate the magic of African cultural intersections. We also have a DJ playing African music all day!

Is it even a celebration of Africa if there is no dancing? The line-up of dance performances for this year’s festival include Fusha Dance, RBG Girlz, and many more. So, get ready to experience African dancing like never before. You will feel accessibility to the rich African culture as we transport you to the Motherland with African sounds and dance movements.

The Festivities will begin at 10 am.

Event Safety

We will be following COVID Safety protocols, which includes temperature checks, face coverings, social distancing, and reduced capacity -- every measure will be taken to keep you safe as you experience Africa like never before.

We will also have COVID Sanitation and Cleaning provided by MWF NEW YORK and the COVID-19 Vaccine will be provided by the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center.

About Rose Luangisa

Born in Bukoba, Tanzania, Rose Luangisa came to the U.S. in 1987 and earned both a B.S. in Computer Information Systems and an MBA from IONA College. She got her start at African Family Day at Memorial Park in Mount Vernon (her U.S. hometown) and opened Luangisa African Gallery in 1996.

Over the past 25 years, she’s showcased artifacts and other crafts at those fairs, festivals and museum events which are symbolic of Africa’s rich cultural heritage, including: Afropunk, International African Arts Festival and Dance Africa! in Brooklyn; Essence Music Festival in New Orleans; Capital Jazz Fest in Maryland, African Festival of the Arts and Arts and Crafts at the DuSable Museum, both in Chicago, African World Festival in Detroit, Newport Jazz Fest in Rhode Island, the Harlem Fine Arts Festival, the Zora Festival in Florida and many other venues.
Rose’s mission has always been to make both artisans and customers happy, to preserve African art, culture, heritage and traditions, and to empower and connect its people across the world. All are invited to make connections and enjoy live African music, drumming & dancing, various entertainment, an accessory fashion show and refreshments while commemorating Wakanda4Ever Celebration – A community celebration of black excellence!
