Perhaps the oddest local primary between two people for their party's line on the November ballot is in Clarkstown, where Republican Committee head Lawrence Garvey got his name on the ballot while Town Supervisor George Hoehmann was seeking (ultimately, successfully) to have his town's term limits law overturned so he could run again. The inside-baseball maneuvering managed to unseat longtime Clarkstown town Justice Scott Ugell, also a Republican, whose exploration of candidacy started out in collaboration with Garvey, ended with acrimony and led to an investigation by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct.
