Israel-Hamas Conflict Marks Anniversary: What To Expect In NYC

There are dueling pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli events in the city planned for Monday.

NEW YORK CITY — Monday marks one year of the Israel- Hamas conflict, and a number of vigils, student walkouts and protests are expected to take place throughout the city.

Thousands of Israeli and Palestinian civilians have been killed since the conflict began last year, Patch previously reported.

It is expected there will be dueling pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli events in the city.

Student Walkouts Planned

Columbia University students are expected to walkout around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Police and campus security are aware of the planned walkout, according to multiple media reports.

Walkouts are reportedly planned at a number of other colleges in the city as well.

In an Instagram post, Columbia University Apartheid Divest, called on students and faculty to walk out and join the movement for Palestinian liberation.

"After an entire year of uninterrupted genocide—now more than ever, we must act," the post read.

NYC Protests and Vigils

The group, Within Our Lifetime, in a post on X formerly Twitter, said they'd be leading a Pro-Palestinian march from Wall Street beginning at 1 p.m.

The group will then go to City Hall around 2:30 p.m. and will then head to Washington Square Park, Union Square, Grand Central, Times Square and finally Columbus Circle at 6 p.m.

“Call out of work and school, take to the streets and join us throughout the day," the group's flier said.

At Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan will host a community-wide commemoration of the Oct. 7 attacks called "Oct.7 One Year Later."

In the Flatiron District, the Young Jewish Professionals will host a memorial event which will include a candle lighting ceremony, a kosher dinner and a charity donation table, among other things.

In Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, Atir Vinnikov, a survivor of the initial Hamas attack on the Nova music festival, will speak at the Kings Bay Y about his experience at a memorial ceremony starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Sephardic Community Center is hosting a memorial ceremony at 7:30 p.m. in Midwood to honor the memory of Ariel Eliyahu, a former student at Brooklyn's Barkai Yeshiva school, who died in the war. His parents will be in attendance.

NYPD Prepared For Monday's Protest

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said "It's all hands on deck" in an interview with CBS News.

"We want to have a safe day and let New Yorkers go about their business unabated."Chell said. Every asset the NYPD has will be on display. "You'll see barricades. You'll see marked police cars. You'll see our strategic response group on bikes. You'll see drones, up when we need them. You'll see aviation when we need them," Chell said.
