2 NYPD Sergeants Shot While Catching NYC Armed Robbery Suspect

NEW YORK CITY — Two NYPD sergeants were shot and injured as they tried to apprehend an armed robbery suspect in Lower Manhattan Thursday, police said.
The sergeants were responding to a robbery that happened at 91 Canal St. in Chinatown around 4:15 p.m., police said.
The suspect —identified as Joshua Dorsett, 22, had just robbed several women at gunpoint, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press conference.

The two sergeants spotted Dorsett seven minutes later as he was fleeing the scene at 167 Eldridge St., Kenny said.
When the NYPD sergeants caught up to Dorsett and attempted to arrest him, a struggle occurred, and the 22-year-old pulled out a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, police said.

One sergeant was shot in the groin, and the other was grazed in the leg, police said.
Both of them were hospitalized.
The sergeant who was grazed in the leg, Christopher Leap, 34, was released from the hospital Thursday night, police officials said.
