NEW YORK CITY — A 6-year-old New York City school student and her mother have been deported after they were detained by ICE following a routine immigration court appearance last week, officials said.

"We are heartbroken to hear the news that early this morning, the Trump administration deported a 6-year-old student from PS 89 in Elmhurst, Queens, as well as her mother, to Ecuador," Assembly Member Catalina Cruz and Council Member Shekar Krishnan said in a joint statement to PIX11 News.

ICE transferred the mother and daughter to Texas, leaving the 19-year-old brother alone at a detention center in NJ, Patch previously reported.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told NBC New York that the family had illegally entered the U.S. from Ecuador in 2022. They have all received final orders of removal from an immigration judge, the spokesperson told the outlet.

Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the move in a video statement posted on X.

"This is cruel, and I say to those who did this, where is your humanity?" Hochul said. "President Trump, you said you were going after the worst of the worst. Do you think she’s really the worst of the worst?"

The family's detention was first reported by THE CITY.

Earlier this month, another city school student was detained by ICE after he attended an immigration hearing, Patch previously reported.

The student has been identified as 20-year-old Mamadou Diallo, according to City Council Member Lincoln Restler.
