Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Police and experts stressed to Patch that they are not aware of any credible threats ahead of a so-called "Day of Hate" planned by neo-Nazi groups for Saturday. Out of an "abundance of caution" the NYPD said it will deploy additional units to sensitive locations such as places of worship. (New York City Patch)
  2. City hall has given authority over migrant emergency centers to NYC's public hospital system, bypassing typical oversight procedures, according to a recently-published memo. That comes with more than $100 million in spending in an "obscure" arrangement. Since last summer more than 47,100 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City, with 29,700 still residing in city shelters, according to government records. (THE CITY)
  3. Ten local environmental groups that tend to many of New York City's waterways are opposed to the federal government's tentatively-selected $52 billion storm surge mitigation plan for the city region. Their main concerns are that the plan, which calls for flood walls and other barriers, doesn't take into account sea level rise enough, and could damage natural habitats. (Gothamist)
  4. Congressman George Santos is facing even more criticism after sponsoring a bill that would declare AR-15 style rifles, which have been tied to some of the nation's most devastating mass-shootings, the "national gun of the U.S." He also picked a fight with Mayor Eric Adams on Twitter over a report on surplus medical supplies. (New York City Patch)
  5. Around 90 percent of all 670,000 cars stopped by NYPD officers in 2022 had Black or Latino drivers, data obtained by the New York Civil Liberty Union shows. The police department has not released vehicle stop numbers for past years. (Gothamist)
