Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- More bike lanes than ever are peddling their way onto New York City streets this year, the Department of Transportation said on Monday. They plan on "hardening" existing lanes with physical barriers between bikes and car traffic, while building new ones to meet "historic levels" of cyclist traffic. (New York City Patch)
- Governor's Island will by 2028 be home to a $700 million "living laboratory" to study climate change. Officially the "New York Climate Exchange," the new facility that will be run by State University of New York Stony Brook, and house 7,000 permanent jobs, with space dedicated to research and education. The plan to build a research campus on the island dates back to former Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2020. (New York City Patch)
- Ninety-three percent of firearms used in New York City crimes were brought from other states, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. That's three times higher than the national average of 28 percent and significantly more than the second-highest city, Baltimore, where 61 percent of guns came from other states. (New York Daily News)
- The NY State legislature has approved new State Assembly districts that virtually mirror the ones that were put in place last year. They were drawn by the Independent Redistricting Commission. Check out your district in a map here. (Gothamist)
- South Bronx Literacy Academy is set to become the first school in New York City specifically dedicated to students with dyslexia. Under a pilot program, detained or incarcerated students at Rikers Island will also be screened for difficulty reading. (New York Daily News)
