NEW YORK CITY — A man officially faces a murder charge in a subway shoving last month that gripped New York City amid rising fears of transit crime, authorities said.

Carlton McPherson, 24, was indicted Wednesday in the death of straphanger Jason Volz, 54, inside a Harlem subway station, prosecutors said.

"As alleged, Carlton McPherson tragically took Jason Volz’s life in a vicious and completely unprovoked act of violence," said Alvin Bragg, district attorney for Manhattan, in a statement.

"Mr. Volz was a father and native New Yorker, and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones in their ongoing grief."

Volz stood on a platform inside the 125th Street station March 25 when McPherson pushed him onto the tracks, prosecutors said.

An oncoming train struck Volz and killed him, authorities said.

The shoving came amid a spate of high-profile violence in the subway system — including a caught-on-video fight and shooting — that stoked many New Yorkers' fears.
