Adams To Name Melissa Aviles-Ramos As New Schools Chancellor: Report

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Eric Adams is expected to announce a new schools chancellor at a press conference Wednesday.

Melissa Aviles-Ramos will take on the new position, according to multiple media reports.

Aviles-Ramos will be replacing David Banks who announced on Tuesday he would be resigning from his position before the end of the year and retire.

His retirement will take effect on Dec. 31.

Aviles-Ramos was chief of staff to Banks previously but left the role to be a college administrator, NY1 reported.

Aviles-Ramos has worked as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, deputy superintendent and acting superintendent within New York City public schools.

Banks had held top schools position for nearly three years. He is the latest city official to step down in recent weeks.

On Monday, health commissioner Ashwin Vasan announced his resignation.

Banks' home was among those raided by federal agents on Sept. 4. NYPD commissioner Edward Caban phone was seized in the raid, and he would later resign amid a corruption probe. Chief legal counsel Liza Zornberg also announced her resignation following the raids.
