NEW YORK, NY — A man suspected in a recent New York City Subway stabbing spree has been captured. Rigoberto Lopez, who police say confessed to all four stabbings on the subway's "A" train over the weekend, faces murder and attempted murder charges as two of the four victims have died.

Lopez has been charged with one count of murder 1, two counts of murder 2 and two counts of attempted murder 2, New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said Sunday. He was found by police Saturday evening near 186th Street and Audubon Avenue in Washington Heights, according to a New York Daily News report.

NYPD Deputy Chief Brian McGee told the Daily News and others all the attacks were unprovoked.

Lopez is accused of stabbing four people on the subway's "A" line between upper Manhattan and Far Rockaway, Queens over a 14-hour time frame over the weekend. Two victims, Carlos Martinez, 67 and Claudine Roberts, 42, have died. The others have been seriously wounded.

Martinez was stabbed on 181st Street and Roberts at the Inwood/207th Street stop, the Daily News reported. Other attacks linked to Lopez were at the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue and 181st Street/Fort Washington Avenue stations, according to the report.

Lopez, 21, is considered homeless, living out of a shelter in Brooklyn, according to a report from AM New York. Various news reports have stated he has a history of mental illness.

The victims appear to be homeless as well and taking shelter in the subway amid the treacherous cold, according to the Daily News.
