NEW YORK — Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he will run for a fourth term as New York State's top elected official. The Democratic governor revealed his plans in a Tuesday radio interview just months after his commanding 2018 re-election victory.

"I plan to run for a fourth term," Cuomo said after persistent questioning from WAMC radio host Alan Chartock.

"I believe we have the opportunity to set a standard of progressivity and normalcy," Cuomo added. "I know this job, I work seven days a week at it, and I think we have accomplishments."

Voters will not decide whether to give Cuomo four more years in office until 2022. But if he is successful, he would be just the second governor to ever win a fourth four-year term. Nelson Rockefeller became the first in 1970.

Cuomo cruised to a third term as governor in November, winning 59.6 percent of the votes to Republican Marc Molinaro's 36.2 percent. He also easily overcame a left-flank Democratic primary challenge from the actress and activist Cynthia Nixon.

Speculation loomed that Cuomo might run for president in 2020, as he has pitched himself as the leader of New York's fight against President Donald Trump. But the governor has instead endorsed former vice president Joe Biden, who has emerged as the frontrunner in the crowded Democratic presidential field.
