NEW YORK — Five babies is plenty for April the giraffe. The New York beast whose live-streamed pregnancies amazed the world is going on birth control, her caretakers announced Thursday.

The team at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville has decided to retire April from the park's breeding program and put her on contraceptives starting Friday, said the park's owner, Jordan Patch.

"It’s a great celebration for her because she has certainly done her purpose, and that is produce a beautiful, healthy calf in her lifetime," Patch said in a video posted to Facebook.

April, now 17, has indeed given birth to five calves — most recently Azizi, who Patch said is now just short of three months old and already seven feet and five inches tall. More than 300,000 people watched Azizi's birth on YouTube, according to the Associated Press.

Patch said April and Azizi will be moved into a new barn to be with her other son, Tajiri, whose April 2017 birth drew more than 1 million viewers to the park's live stream.

Animal Adventure Park will continue its breeding program with Oliver, the father of April's calves, and Johari, another giraffe mom.
