Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Some asylum seekers arriving in New York City on buses from Texas are set to be housed in the first-floor gymnasium of an active NYPD police station, drawing criticism from Pat Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association union. (New York City Patch)
    • New York City is receiving $30.5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in funding for migrants, much less than the $300 million initially requested. (Spectrum News NY1)
  2. A company is testing out carbon capture technology on a large Upper West Side apartment building. It works by capturing a majority of the building's emissions and eventually mixing it with concrete to create bricks. The technology could potentially help building owners comply with a law next year that will cap carbon emissions, but some environmental groups say it's a distraction from electrifying buildings and moving away from fossil fuels. (THE CITY)
  3. Nearly one in four New Yorkers — or about two million people — lost at least one person close to them in the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new city data. About 900,000 lost at least three loved ones, with Black and Latino New Yorkers dying at a higher rate than white New Yorkers. (subscription/The New York Times)
  4. E-bike retailers are already preparing for a law that will go into effect in the fall, requiring all electric bicycles to have Underwriter Laboratories certification, considered the "gold standard" in the United States. (Spectrum News NY1)
  5. The MTA says it's on track to have a security camera installed on every subway car by 2025 — but it's a long and complicated process. No camera was on the F train car where Jordan Neely was riding when a fellow rider put him in a deadly chokehold. (Gothamist)
