NEW YORK – The remnants of tropical depression Barry are churning towards the Northeast and are expected to bring torrential downpours to a sweltering New York City this week, forecasters warned.

Barry hit Louisiana Saturday, downgraded significantly from the hurricane that it had threatened to arrive as but still bringing with it 35 mph winds and heavy rain.

On Monday, it was trudging out of Louisiana and affecting parts of Texas, Tennessee and Missouri as a tropical depression.

Its path puts it on track to arrive in the Northeast Wednesday, according to forecasters at AccuWeather, combining with a heatwave that will see dangerously high temperatures.

"Given how much moisture will be in place, there is the potential for heavy rainfall with any showers or thunderstorms that do develop," AccuWeather meteorologist Randy Adkins said.

"Fortunately, downpours should be moving along rather briskly, so the threat for widespread flash flooding is low."

The National Weather Service is predicting thunderstorms will affect the area until Thursday night.

The rain is not expected to bring relief to the high temperatures. The NWS said highs are expected in the lows 90s on Wednesday, with the heat expected to reach 98 degrees by Saturday.
