Forest Hills Senator To Provide NYC Storm Resources Through September

NEW YORK CITY — September is National Preparedness Month and state Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. is providing resources on how to stay safe during emergency situations via webinars and in-person events in conjunction with the city Office of Emergency Management until Sept. 29, announced his office on Tuesday.

This comes hours after Queens was issued a flash flood warning earlier in the morning, nearly two weeks after the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ida, which saw flash flooding through the borough, and weeks away from the 10th year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy decimated several homes along the Rockaway Peninsula, as well as Howard Beach, which the Forest Hills senator also represents.

“We’ve seen the devastating effects of natural disasters firsthand when Superstorm Sandy tore through our communities and left a trail of destruction in its wake,” Addabbo said in a prepared statement. “My office team will never forget how we all worked together throughout our communities to help people recover from that horrific storm,”

The OEM will teach people how to prepare families, protect pets and safeguard businesses and communities thanks to partnerships with Community Organizations Active in Disasters and Community Emergency Networks. The seminars and panel discussions will help equip individuals with the tools they need to prepare for, respond to and recover from an emergency, his office added.

“As we continue to face stronger and stronger storms as a consequence of climate change, it is imperative that our coastal communities are prepared for when the next big storm hits and have a plan to protect their homes and businesses while getting their families to safety,” Addabbo said. “The information provided through the NYC Emergency Management Department during these events will help save lives.”
