Broadway Bound Theatre Festival Brings Playwrights Center Stage

The inaugural festival will present new works by playwrights from around the country beginning July 30.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Summertime is a hotbed for theatre, from Shakespeare in Central Park to Broadway in Bryant Park. But this summer, a new act emerges with a focus on playwrights: the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival.

Happening at the theater at 14th Street Y, located at 344 E 14th St., the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival runs Sundays, July 30 through Aug. 20, as a self-described reclaiming of the theatre festival experience.

In its inaugural year, the festival presents new works by playwrights from around the country. Tickets are available for $25 on the festival website or at the door upon arrival.

The lineup includes stories about a gay couple living in New York City, whose lives are forever changed by a brutal assault; a 59-year-old artist whose world is turned upside down by an opportunity that forces her to choose between her marriage and her dreams; and the director of an LGBT advocacy organization, who must help piece together the mystery surrounding the murder of one of her subordinates.

Broadway Bound Theatre Festival organizers state on the event website that the festival is not a competition; instead, it is intended as a community-building celebration of staged theatre, where “playwrights take center stage.”
