Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. City officials agree that New York City's property tax system is terrible and needs to be changed. At least that's the takeaway from a Tuesday City Council meeting in which lawmakers discussed what to do now that the controversial developer tax break 421a has expired, and whether or not small property owners should all be grouped into the same tax category. (New York City Patch)
  2. Facebook's parent company Meta is planning to lay off over 800 New York City workers at three office location, according to a notice filed with the government, which states "economic" reasons. Back in 2020, Facebook signed a lease in an office building near Penn Station that former Mayor Bill de Blasio hailed as the first major lease of the coronavirus pandemic. (New York City Patch)
  3. New York City cab drivers are set to see their first wage increase in 10 years by the end of 2022, with the price of a ride estimated to go up by 23 percent for customers. The per-minute and per-mile rates for Uber and Lyft drivers will also increase. The Taxi and Limousine Commission approved the rate hikes on Tuesday. (Gothamist)
  4. Mayor Eric Adams announced a financial plan that would save New York City a projected $2.5 billion in fiscal years 2023 and 2024, fearing the potential for a recession in years ahead. Budget cuts impacted every city agency, with the NYPD, FDNY and Department of Sanitation being the only three that didn't meet the reduction targets. (AMNY)
  5. NYC officials are set to announce the construction of a new soccer stadium in Willets Point, Queens, on Wednesday, which will serve as home to the New York City Football Club, which had previously hosted some of its games at Yankee Stadium. The new field will also come with 2,500 "affordable" apartments in the area. (THE CITY)
