Many businesses shut down, furlough its employees or take extended vacations during the hot summer months, but for Assisted Living Home Care Services in Cheshire, Westport and Putnam, summer is a time to gear up its 700+ staff for the company’s charitable activities during the fall. Specifically, the family-owned eldercare agency recently hosted a public ice cream fundraiser at its Cheshire location to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association-Connecticut Chapter, which raised $360 within a few hours. The ice cream was provided by MicroCreamery of Connecticut, another local family business with stores in Cheshire, Woodbridge and Milford.

“Having provided senior care for hundreds of Connecticut families for nearly thirty years, we know that elderly decline doesn’t ever go on vacation,” said Mario D’Aquila, MBA, chief operating officer of Assisted Living Home Care Services. “It’s never too early to fundraise for the Alzheimer’s Association and we won’t stop until a cure is discovered for this debilitating disease.”

According to the Alzheimer’s Association- CT Chapter, more than 76,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s in the state, and nearly double that amount of people are providing their unpaid care. The non-profit organization offers support to anyone afflicted with Alzheimer’s, advocating for the needs and rights of those facing dementia, or advancing critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and ultimately, a cure.

Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over several years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. On average, a person with Alzheimer's lives four to eight years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

Besides the ice cream fundraiser, each year, Assisted Living Home Care Services encourages its employees, business partners and the local community to join its ALZ Team- Forget Me Not Fighters and participate in the Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s event. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Thus far, the ALZ Team has raised $850.00 in pledges.

“I am extremely proud of how our employees have rallied together during these summer months to raise awareness for a disease that affects so many of our clients and Connecticut seniors,” adds D’Aquila.
