De Blasio Misinterprets 'Jekyll & Hyde' In Tweet Slamming Biden

The mayor said Joe Biden is like "Dr. Jekyll" on women's rights issues. The internet quickly pointed out that Jekyll is the good guy.

NEW YORK — Bill de Blasio might want to sit in on a high school literature class. The New York City mayor mixed up the plot of the book "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" on Wednesday in an attempted attack on presidential campaign rival Joe Biden.

Robert Louis Stevenson's classic 1886 novella tells the story of the eponymous doctor with a murderous alter ego.

De Blasio brought up the book to slam Biden's support for the Hyde Amendment, a provision that prohibits federal funding for most abortions. The mayor and several other Democratic presidential candidates want to repeal the amendment, but Biden's campaign has reportedly said that the former vice president backs it.

"(W)hen it comes to supporting American women on issues like repealing the Hyde Amendment, @JoeBiden is Dr. Jekyll," the mayor said in a Twitter post from his campaign account.

The internet was quick to point out that Henry Jekyll is, of course, a good guy of sorts in the story. It's revealed that doctor transforms into the evil Edward Hyde to partake in unsavory behaviors and has to drink a serum to become his normal self again.

De Blasio's tweet with the messed-up reference racked up more than 700 replies, many of which pointed out his mistake.

"Hey Bill, join me at the @NYPL (New York Public Library) and we can review the plot of that book," wrote Max Burns, a Democratic communications strategist.

"Y'know, whenever you get back to NYC," he added.

The mayor acknowledged the goof about an hour later — but didn't ease up his criticism of Biden.

"I need to brush up on late 19th century literature. @JoeBiden needs to brush up on women’s reproductive health," he tweeted.
