NEW YORK CITY — Two people were killed early Saturday when a car barreled off the Manhattan Bridge and crashed into a busy Chinatown street.

A driver in a blue Chevrolet Malibu exiting the Manhattan Bridge rammed through a traffic median at Bowery and Canal streets around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, striking a male cyclist and a woman sitting on a bench, police said.

EMS rushed to the scene and declared both victims dead. The pedestrian was identified as 63-year-old May Kwok of Brooklyn, and the cyclist as 55-year-old Kevin Scott Cruickshank of Morningside Heights.

Witnesses told NBC reporters they saw the car race off the Manhattan Bridge at high speed before the driver lost control, striking both victims and an NYPD van, which was then pushed into a nearby jewelry store.

Following the crash, the driver and a passenger attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended about a block away, police said.

The two women, both reportedly in their 20s, were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition and placed in police custody. Authorities said the passenger rented the car about a month ago and had yet to return it.

As of Monday morning, the NYPD had not yet filed any charges.
