Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- One Brooklyn Health System, a major health care provider in Brooklyn, is now acknowledging that a "cybersecurity incident" which knocked out the computer system at three of its locations for months, also followed a breach of at least 235,000 people's personal information. One Brooklyn Health now faces a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of patients. (THE CITY)
- Top Democrat lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul have reached a tentative agreement for New York's much-delayed budget. The $229 billion proposal includes funding for NYC's transit system, changes to the state's bail laws, and a $1 increase to New York's cigarette tax. (Gothamist)
- A course on personal finance — a class that offers practical "real-life information" — at Stuyvesant High School has been popular with students. Some state lawmakers want to make it a graduation requirement for all seniors. (AMNY)
- A former police officer's lawsuit alleges that he was fired from his job after failing a drug test but not because he was using an illicit substance, such as marijuana before it was legalized, rather due to his using hemp soap. City officials said they would review the case. (New York City Patch)
- Tenant advocates want a rent freeze, while some landlords want a bigger rent increase than has been seen in years — as high as 8.5 percent. Both made their case while testifying on Thursday, ahead of the city's Rental Guidelines Board's expected vote next week, which will determine how much rents will increase for one million rent stabilized apartments. - A Bronx man was bitten by a peacock yesterday. No, really. (New York City Patch)
- Some dreams come to an end: actress and comedian Amy Schumer is selling her Upper West Side abode she once described as her "dream apartment" for $13 million. (Upper West Side Patch)
- Starting next week, New Yorkers will get the chance to participate in over 160 educational walking tours through the Municipal Arts Society. One of them is a culinary tour of Astoria, Queens. (Astoria-Long Island City Patch)
