Off-Duty Cop Shoots Armed Man In Brooklyn, NYPD Says

The man was shot in the chest and hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.

CANARSIE, BROOKLYN — An 28-year-old man was left with serious injuries after a shootout with an armed off-duty police officer in Canarsie early Wednesday, police said.

The officer was driving near East 87 Street and Foster Avenue around 2 a.m. when a man armed with several weapons approached his car and knocked on his window with a gun, police chief Rodney Harrison said in a news conference.

The officer drove his car away from the armed man and got out. At the same time, the man fired his gun, missing the officer, police said.

The officer then fired several shots in return, striking the suspect in the chest.

The officer was taken to Mount Sinai Beth Israel to be examined for tinnitus, and the suspect was taken to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

Two guns and a knife believed to belong to the suspect were recovered at the scene, police said. One of the guns appeared to be wrapped in a rubber glove or other plastic or rubber material.

The identities of the suspect and officer had not been released as of Wednesday morning.

Police said an investigation into the shooting is ongoing. No other information was immediately available.
