STATEN ISLAND, NY — A Staten Island man was killed Friday night when he was shot by an off-duty police officer while pointing a realistic-looking firearm at officers, according to reports.

Jesse Campbell, 44, of Great Kills,died at Staten Island hospital where he was taken after the shooting, SILive.com reported.

Campbell was seen at the back of a diner with a gun about 8 p.m. Friday, ABC News reported.

An off-duty officer saw Campbell a short time later a short distance away from the diner, Andrew's Diner on Hylan Boulevard in Eltingville, with what appeared to be a firearm and told another off-duty officer, ABC 7 Eyewitness News reported.

The officers told him multiple times to drop the gun, but Campbell instead pointed the firearm at them, that report said. One of the officers then shot him multiple times.

The weapon turned out to be a realistic-looking imitation firearm, the reports said.

Campbell had a lengthy violent history with police, SILive.com reported. Eyewitness News said he had seven prior arrests, including for narcotics and larceny.
