Earthquake Felt In NYC

New Yorkers could feel vibrations from the 4.4-magnitude earthquake.

NEW YORK, NY — Some New Yorkers could feel an earthquake that hit near Dover, Delaware on Thursday evening. Tremors from the 4.4-magnitude quake stretched through New York City and into parts of Connecticut and Pennsylvania, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several New Yorkers in different parts of the city reported feeling vibrations on Twitter. About 20 million people within a roughly 300-mile radius could feel the quake, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, which tracks earthquakes.

But the tremors only lasted less than a minute even near the epicenter, according testimonies collected by the EMSC.

"Our cats (who were sleeping) looked up at the creaking sounds our building made, but weren't frightened," one New Yorker wrote to the EMSC.

Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains are rare, but tend to affect larger areas than on the West Coast, the USGS says. The last quake to be felt in New York City was a 5.5-magnitude quake that hit Virginia in 2011.
