NEW YORK – A reprieve from rain might be forecast for tomorrow, but summer looks set to be a wet and dreary season.

The long-term forecast from the Farmers' Almanac is predicting damp and thunderstorms through June – in fact, it might be September before we see consistently pleasant conditions.

Some of the storms could be quite severe with even tornadoes possible, the almanac, which has been predicting weather since 1818, said in a release.

Not to be confused with the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which was founded in 1792, the Farmers' Almanac forecasts “above-normal” precipitation through the summer of 2019.

“Much of our summer forecast predicts lots of rain, thunderstorms and wetness during July and August in the Northeast and New England areas” its editor Pete Geiger said.

He added that clouds and showers would probably create steamy conditions.

“Add to that the above-normal precipitation, and you’ve got oppressively humid and uncomfortable conditions,” he said.

States in the North- and South-central should expect to see “dangerous weather” in late June, the almanac said. This includes thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds and even “devastating” tornadoes.

Here is what is predicted for the New York region through June:

MAY 2019

  • 12th-15th.Unsettled weather, with a few light rain showers arriving from the south.
  • 16th-19th.Skies gradually clear; milder temperatures.
  • 20th-23rd.Very warm.
  • 24th-27th.Frequent rain showers, then fresh, colder air sweeps into New England by Memorial Day
  • 28th-31st.Clearing skies.

The Farmers’ Almanac has been published annually for more than 200 years, offering long-term weather predictions for the US and Canada. It also contains information on gardening, cooking, home remedies and more. It distributes about 1.7 million copies a year.

It uses a formula that takes into consideration things like sunspot activity, the moon’s tidal action and the position of other planets.
