​FDNY Announces Plans for 25th Anniversary 9/11 Commemoration on Staten Island in 2026​

The ceremony on Staten Island is scheduled to take place two days before the annual 9/11

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has unveiled a year-long plan to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which will include a major ceremony on Staten Island in September 2026. The event, which will specifically honor the 343 FDNY members killed on 9/11, as well as the hundreds who have since died from 9/11-related illnesses, is scheduled for September 9, 2026, at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park, home of the Staten Island Ferry Hawks.

Key Details of the FDNY's Commemoration Plan:Main Ceremony Location: The stadium was chosen for its significance, as it is just steps away from the Postcards Memorial, the city's first monument to 9/11 victims, and offers a clear view of the Lower Manhattan skyline.Purpose: To honor the 343 FDNY members lost on 9/11 and the approximately 400 additional members who have died from related illnesses.

Year-Long Initiatives:Film Premiere: A film honoring FDNY Chaplain Father Michael Judge, the first recorded victim of the attacks, is set for release.Health Report: The department will release a 25th-anniversary health report on the impact of the attacks on its members.Podcast and Emblem: Plans include the launch of a commemorative podcast series and the reveal of a ceremonial patch, with proceeds benefiting the FDNY Foundation.Solemnity: Outgoing FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker stated the commemoration will be handled with "respect, solemnity, honor and all that it deserves."The ceremony on Staten Island is scheduled to take place two days before the annual 9/11 commemoration at Ground Zero.
