Bird Strike Forces Outbound NYC Flight To Land
American Airlines flight 1722 took from LGA just after 7:20 p.m. on Thursday.

NEW YORK CITY — An American Airlines flight departing from LaGuardia Airport was forced to make an emergency landing at JFK after a bird flew into the airplane's engine Thursday night, officials said.
American Airlines flight 1722 took from LGA just after 7:20 p.m. and was scheduled to land at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina later that night when a bird was sucked into the right engine, causing major damage, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials said.
The flight then was forced to divert its course and head towards JFK.

A clip posted to X shows the moment the engine sucks up the bird, and a small explosion by the plane's tail can be seen.
No injuries were reported from the incident, American Airlines said in a statement.

The American Airlines flight bound for Charlotte was scheduled to re-depart Friday morning and passengers were provided hotel accommodations for the night, according to the airline.
