Governors Island Now Open Year-Round; Ferry Service Expanded
For the first time, the island is now open past its usual season. It will remain open all year and is serviced by a new NYC Ferry route.
NEW YORK, NY — Starting today, Governors Island is open past its traditional seasonal schedule — and for the first time, it will remain open year-round.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in September that the island would shift to a year-round, seven-day-a-week schedule, after years of only being available to New Yorkers from May to October.
The public can visit the island from 7 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., and it will be accessible via the South Brooklyn route when the Coney Island route opens later this year.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine public space in this city — and now, we’re proud to keep the crown jewel of our harbor open to New Yorkers all year round," de Blasio said in September. "From expanded ferry service, to more amenities than ever, to year-round visitors from all over the city, there’s no better time to experience and invest in Governors Island."
Governors Island, a 172-acre island in New York Harbor, opened to the public in 2006 after decades as a military installation.
