Hate Crimes Surge In NYC, Up 12.6% In 2023: Report

Anti-Jewish incidents represented the majority of felony hate crimes in New York City in 2023, according to a new report.

NEW YORK CITY – The NYPD recorded 669 hate crimes in New York City in 2023, a 12.6% increase from 2022, according to a new report from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office.

Anti-Jewish incidents represented 65% of all felony hate crime incidents in the city in 2023, the report found.

The city recorded the majority – 61.4% – of hate crime incidents in New York State, a change from past years, when the city and state recorded roughly equal shares of incidents.

Crimes are increasingly targeting people, rather than property, “with most attacks against Jewish, Black, and Gay Male New Yorkers,” according to the report.

Statewide, anti-Asian crimes have fallen after a pandemic-era spike: there were 57 incidents in 2023, versus 140 in 2021.

Compared to five years ago in 2018, statewide incidents targeting Muslim and Transgender New Yorkers have each more than doubled, from 18 to 37 and 10 to 24 incidents respectively.

Hate crimes are defined in the report as motivated by “a perception or belief about the victim’s race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation or another protected characteristic.”

They may be committed against a person or property, and involve offenses such as threats, harassment, vandalism, assault, battery, arson, and even homicide.

The FBI generally releases an annual report in the fall, which includes data on crime statistics across the United States, as well as a specific section dedicated to hate crimes.

At present, 2022 is the most recent year for which data is available.

According to the FBI, over 11,634 hate crime incidents were reported in 2022, compared with 10,840 in 2021. The majority of hate crimes targeted black Americans in 2022.
