Heavy Flooding Distrupted Travel In NYC, More Rain To Fall Monday

NEW YORK CITY — Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused major flooding throughout New York City Sunday, but forecasts show the area could still get hit with more showers Monday afternoon.

Possible thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening could bring damaging winds and heavy downpours to the area, forecasters said.

Three to 5 inches of rain fell across the tri-state area Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. On Sunday evening, more than 2 inches of rain fell in Central Park.

In Central Park, the 86th Street Transverse was deemed impassable due to floodwaters under the bridge, according to post on X by the NYPD.

In Manhattan, the Chelsea Market was temporarily closed after the rain caused flooding inside the concourse.

At NYC airports, dozen of flights were cancelled due to the inclement weather.

Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia was temporarily suspended because of flooding in Newark.

In addition, as of Monday morning, NYC beaches in Brooklyn and Queens have been closed due to rip currents.
