Human Remains Found In Suitcase Floating In East River: NYPD

NEW YORK CITY — Human remains were found inside a suitcase that was floating in the East River near Governor’s Island on Wednesday, police said.

Police were called to the scene after a passing ship noticed the suitcase in the water around 5:30 p.m.

The NYPD's Harbor Unit retrieved and transported the remains to Pier 16.

Police apparently retrieved a human torso, according to multiple media reports.

Additional details on the incidents were not readily available as of Thursday morning.

The city's medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

An investigation remains ongoing.
