Hurricane Jose: NYC Hour-By-Hour Forecast As Storm Is Felt In The City

NEW YORK, NY — Hurricane Jose is still expected to veer off east into the Atlantic Ocean, posing no threat of a direct hit to New York City and the surrounding areas.

But part of the storm's outer reaches will hit the city today, bringing some steady rain to the area and chances of spotty downpours. A tropical storm watch in the area has been lifted, but coastal flood warnings and high surf advisories remain for South Brooklyn and its beaches.

The category one hurricane was about 200 miles east off the coast of North Carolina as of early Tuesday morning, with maximum sustained winds of about 75 miles per hour.

"A hurricane does not need to make landfall to cause significant adverse effects in the Northeast, since the shape of the coast tends to enhance storm effects and trap ocean water," AccuWeather's Alex Sosnowski said. "The slow-moving and lingering nature of Jose will lead to prolonged impact on beach communities and offshore interests."

Wind speeds could reach the low-to-mid 20s in miles per hour in some areas. Overall, though, New York City appears to have avoided any major effects of the storm.
