President Donald Trump has urged increased deportation of undocumented migrants, particularly those with criminal convictions. According to ICE, 82 of the 114 arrested in the recent raid had been convicted of a crime. They included violent convictions – one man had been found guilty of manslaughter and another convicted of rape — but also nonviolent crimes. Five people had convictions for possessing drugs, and seven people had charges related to fraud, according to ICE.

Among those arrested, 15 have pending criminal charges and have not yet been convicted of a crime, according to the ICE statement.

New York City is one of a number of prominent cities to declare itself a "sanctuary city," vowing to refrain from cooperating with federal immigration authorities in specific cases. Trump has condemned sanctuary cities and vowed to withhold federal funding from any municipalities that refuse to work with ICE and other federal agencies.
