NEW YORK CITY — Luigi Mangione has hired a former assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for his New York City case as he faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Karen Friedman Agnifilo is expected to represent Mangione in New York, according to a CNN report.

Friedman Agnifilo worked as an assistant district attorney under Cyrus Vance Jr. for seven years before leaving to start her own private practice in 2021.

The Manhattan District Attorney disclosed Friday that Mangione may waive extradition to New York City as early as Tuesday, Patch previously reported.

"Indications are that the defendant may waive, but that waiver is not complete until a court proceeding,"Alvin Bragg said at a press conference last Friday.

The earliest a court proceeding could be scheduled in Pennsylvania is Tuesday, Bragg said.

The 26-year-old suspect remains detained at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania, according to the New York Times.

Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks told reporters that the New York case should take "priority" over the charges Mangione faces in Pennsylvania, Patch previously reported.

“We do not intend to delay this defendant’s extradition to New York and we certainly — we’ve indicated to New York, their prosecution should take precedence, and then ours will follow," Weeks said.

Mangione's lawyers have indicated that they are fighting extradition to New York City after he was denied bail by a Pennsylvania judge last Tuesday.

"We are going to continue to press forward on parallel paths. We will be ready, whether he is going to waive extradition or whether he is going to contest extradition," Bragg added.

Mangione faces five charges in Pennsylvania in connection to the killing of Thompson in Midtown Manhattan.

In addition to second-degree murder, Mangione faces other charges in New York.
