Mamdani Leads NYC Mayor Race By Nearly 20 Points: New Poll

Pollsters spoke to registered voters citywide between Aug. 4-7.

NEW YORK CITY — State assemblyman Zohran Mamdani leads the New York City mayoral race by nearly 20 points over Andrew Cuomo, according to a new Siena Research Institute poll released on Tuesday.

According to the poll, Mamdani, who is the Democratic nominee for mayor, leading by 19 points with 44 percent of the vote compared to Cuomo's 25 percent. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa came in third place with 12 percent, while Mayor Eric Adams trailing behind with 7 percent.

Among city Democrats, Mamdani had 55 percent of the vote to Cuomo's 32 percent. More than two-thirds of Republicans support Silwa, according to the poll.

In addition, city independent voters are more closely divided, with 30 percent supporting Mamdani and 20 percent supporting Adams. City voters under 35 are overwhelmingly supporting Mamdani, as are a plurality of voters 35-54 percent, however, voters 55 and older back Cuomo over Mamdani, 38-32 percent.

The state assemblyman is the only candidate who has a net positive favorability rating among voters, with 46 percent viewing him favorably and 32 percent viewing him unfavorably.

"Cuomo has an underwater favorability rating with City voters, 37-54%, and an even worse 29-61% favorability rating with statewide voters, the worst ever favorability rating for Cuomo in a Siena poll. In fact, among Democrats statewide, Cuomo’s favorability rating is 36-56%, down from 51-39% in March," Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said.

"Adams is also underwater with voters in the City, 30-58%, statewide 22-51%, and among Democrats statewide 22-59%. Sliwa has a 26-30% statewide favorability rating, and 30-42% in the City.”

Cuomo has called for the strongest candidate to go head-to-head with Mamdani in November and for the remaining candidates to drop out.

Both Adams and Sliwa have said they will not drop out of the race.
