THE BRONX, NY — A 5-year-old girl got away with her life in the Bronx after a man jumped in front of a subway train while holding her Monday morning, police said.

The train struck and killed the 45-year-old at about 8 a.m. after he jumped in front of it with the girl in his arms at the Kingsbridge Road 4 train station, an NYPD spokesperson said.

First-responders removed the child from the tracks and rushed her to an area hospital with minor injuries, the spokesperson said.

It's uncertain why the man — who appeared to be the girl's father — jumped in front of the train, said a second NYPD spokesperson. Police are still investigating the incident, he said.

The MTA halted 4 trains between Woodlawn and Burnside Avenue for about 90 minutes as the NYPD investigated the ordeal. Southbound 4 trains were running again by 10:10 a.m. but skipped Kingsbridge Road as transit officials finished their investigation, New York City Transit said on Twitter.
