Massive Blaze Rips Through Apartment Building In Manhattan

The five-alarm fire late Saturday night is causing heavy smoke and traffic delays near Forth Washington Avenue and West 164th.

MANHATTAN, NY — Firefighters are battling a five-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Manhattan Saturday night, fire officials said.

The New York Fire Department responded to the blaze in the 100 block of Fort Washington Avenue late on Saturday night. Fire crews remained at the scene as of 11 p.m.

Flames reached the fifth and sixth floors of the six-story building, according to ABC 7. At least people were taken away on stretchers but it's unclear how many people were injured in the fire and the extent of the injuries.

Officials urged residents living in the area to avoid the smoke and close their windows. Traffic delays were expected in the area, officials said.
