NEW YORK – The richest man in New York has amassed $53.8 billion, given away more than $5 billion and got his break with an entry level job at a Wall Street bank. And he's well known to the city.
Michael Bloomberg, the city's former mayor, topped the state's entry on Forbes' list of the the country's richest people.
Bloomberg, 77, made his money by co-founding the financial information and media company Bloomberg LP in 1981. He actually got fired from his first job at the investment bank Salomon Brothers.

After serving as mayor of NYC from 2002 to 2013, Bloomberg has donated more than $5 billion to political causes including gun control and climate change. After ruling out a presidential run, he has vowed to spend $500 million to defeat Donald Trump in 2020.
Bloomberg beat 2018's wealthiest New York resident, David Koch, to take the title.
