MLK Day 2019: NYC Transit Changes

Check out how the MTA is running subways, buses and regional train lines on Monday, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

NEW YORK, NY — The United States will celebrate the life of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr., on Monday, Jan. 21. As with any public holiday, the Metropolitan Transit Authority will be switching up its regular service schedule on city buses and subways as well as regional lines such as the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad.

Subways and buses:

New York City subways will run on a weekend schedule on Monday, which often means service changes on a number of lines and less frequent trains. Check out Patch for this weekend's subway service advisory.

Buses will run on a limited schedule on Monday with minor changes to bus arrival times. Limited lines servicing Staten Island and Queens such as the S81, S84, S86, S90, S91, S92, S94, S96, S98 Q4, Q6, Q25 and Q65 will not run.

Long Island Rail Road:

LIRR users should treat Monday as if it were any other weekend. All trains will be charging off-peak rates in observance of the holiday.

Metro-North Railroad:

The Metro-North Railroad will run extra service on Sunday for anybody leaving the city for the holiday. Thirty-seven extra trains will run on the busiest travel periods on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines.

Just like the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North trains will be running at off-peak prices.
