MTA Transit Changes For New Year's Eve, Day

The MTA will be making several service changes to help New Yorkers both get around on New Year's and escape to the suburbs.

NEW YORK, NY — New Year's Eve is fast approaching, and New York City is gearing up to welcome millions of revelers into the city for the holiday. Most of the people coming into the city will be doing so by way of public transportation, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority is making several changes to its subways, buses and commuter trains for the weekend.

The transit authority is also adding some outbound trains on the weekend ahead of New Year's to help New Yorkers escape the city for the hectic holiday.

Here's a full breakdown of MTA service changes for New Year's:

Friday, Dec. 28:

  • The Long Island Rail Road will operate 13 extra trains departing Penn Station between 12:46 p.m. and 3:48 p.m.
  • The Metro-North Railroad will operate 18 extra trains departing Grand Central Terminal between 12:58 p.m. and 4:10 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 31 (New Year's Eve):

  • The Long Island Rail Road will operate 13 extra trains departing Penn Station between 12:46 p.m. and 3:48 p.m.
  • The Long Island Rail Road is operating 21 extra trains to Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn.
  • Metro-North is operating three extra trains to Grand Central.
  • The New York City Subway and Staten Island Railway will operate on a regular weekday schedule. Some New York City buses will operate on a reduced weekday schedule. All local, express, limited-stop, and Select Bus Service lines will run on an adjusted schedule.
  • Revelers heading to Times Square should avoid using the 42 St-Times Square subway complex, because many exits to the street will be closed. The northbound platform at 50 St 1 station and both north and southbound platforms at 49 St N/Q/R/W station will also be closed from noon until midnight.
  • Addition service to Midtown Manhattan will be running on the 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/A/C/D/E/F/L/N/Q/R and S lines.
  • The MTA recommends avoiding Midtown Manhattan bus lines due to the number of streets that will be shut down for security near Times Square.

Tuesday, Jan. 1 (New Year's Day):

  • Following New Year's Eve celebrations, Metro-North Railroad is operating 48 extra trains departing Grand Central and the Long Island Rail Road is operating 19 extra trains departing Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn.
  • Metro-North will also operate 14 extra trains inbound toward NYC.
  • Subways on lines in and around Times Square will run every 8 to 12 minutes as late as 3 a.m., and the 42nd Street shuttle will operate all night.
  • During the day, the LIRR will operate on a weekend/holiday schedule and Metro-North will operate on an hourly schedule with six extra trains on the New Haven line.
