MTA Unveils Redesigned Subway Map
The new, digital "Live Subway Map" shows moving trains, automatic real-time updates and tracks atop a geographically-correct street grid.

NEW YORK CITY — The iconic New York subway map just got its first major redesign in 40 years, officials said.
MTA on Tuesday unveiled its new digital “Live Subway Map” — an interactive blend of design elements from the classic printed map and The Weekender online map.
The web-based map designed pro bono by Work & Co is in an early, “beta” version that officials encourage riders to check out and give feedback, according to a release.

“Every rider has had the experience where we get on a train one weekend, look up from our phones and see a place we didn’t expect to see,” said Sarah Meyer, New York City Transit’s chief customer officer, in a statement. “When New Yorkers use this map, that will no longer happen. The map that Work & Co has generously donated to the people of New York—will make their lives easier.”
The online map gives riders opportunities to view train service between “Now,” “Tonight” and the “Weekend.” A tap on a subway station shows trains that arrive at the station, along with arrival times that automatically update.

Riders who zoom into the map can not only see trains traveling in real time down their lines, but also a geographically-correct street map that shows subway entrances, station names and more.
The map can be added to iPhone and Android phones’ home screens, where it’ll act like a standalone app.
