Murders, Shootings Drop 35% In July As NYC Crime Again Falls: NYPD
From rape to murder to within subways, nearly every crime dropped last month in the city, according to newly released NYPD statistics.
NEW YORK CITY — Nearly every major crime fell in New York City for the seventh month running, according to newly released NYPD statistics for July.
Murders and shootings both dropped 35 percent compared to the same month last year, the data shows.
The drop in shootings meant 274 fewer people have been shot this year compared to 2022, NYPD officials said.

"We are the safest big city in America and we will continue to build on our measurable successes in order to keep it that way," said NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, in a statement.
Five of seven major crime categories fell for the month, with the exceptions of felony assault and grand larceny auto.

There were 10 more felony assaults this July compared to last, the data shows.
NYPD officials pinned the increase in grand larceny auto on a well-documented exploitation of vulnerabilities in certain Kia and Hyundai ignition systems that thieves use.
The statistics indicate, however, that most types of crime that concerned New Yorkers over the past few years have fallen.
Major crime in the city's subway fell 9.9 percent for the month, for example, according to the data.
Murders are down 11.2 percent, rape fell 10.9 percent and robberies dropped 6.3 percent for the year so far, the data shows.
