NEW YORK – A celebration of America's favorite salty bread snack is being held across the country on National Pretzel Day, which falls on April 26. Plenty of New York City bars and bakeries will be serving them up.

People first started making pretzels because of Lent, when observers abstained from meat, dairy or eggs.

At first pretzels were baked like a squishy bread during the middle ages and were seen as a symbol of good luck.

Rumor has it the pilgrims had them on their ships. For certain, German immigrants had them when they immigrated to the U.S.
