Nearly Every Major Crime In NYC Drops Sharply, New Stats Show

NEW YORK CITY — New York City isn't a hellscape riddled by violent crime — or at least that's according to newly released NYPD statistics.

Major crimes fell sharply in five of seven categories during May, with murder leading the way with a 33 percent decrease from the same point in 2022, data shows.

Shooting incidents also fell in May, with the data showing a nearly 27 percent decrease.

But the drops in violent crimes were offset by an equally sharp increase in another type of complaint: grand larcenies involving automobiles.

The data showed a nearly 33 percent increase in grand larceny auto compared to May last year.

The increase was so great it effectively kept major crimes flat — May in both last year and this year had roughly 10,600 reported incidents, according to the data.
