New Calorie-Count Subway Map Tries to Shame You Into Walking

The map measures how many calories you would burn if you walked instead of rode the subway.

NEW YORK, NY — It's a daily struggle for New Yorkers determining whether they are better off walking or hopping on the subway for a quicker ride to their destination. Now, you have a map to make you feel terrible about choosing to take the subway every time.

Treated.com, a British-based health care website, leapt across the pond to make us all feel really bad about ourselves. The website made a map of the New York City subway system with calorie counts between every stop to tell you how much you'd burn by walking instead of riding.

They did the same for the London tube, but wanted to branch out into American obesity as well.

For instance, someone who lived in Park Slope and worked in Chelsea would burn 683 calories walking to work instead of riding the R train. (It also might be faster.) Then again, that's only if you walk through the R tunnel between Whitehall Street and Court Street.

It may be more useful for shorter journeys — do I hop on the 7 train to go from Grand Central to Times Square or do I burn the 53 calories instead?
