New NYC Trash Bin Rules Go Into Effect This Week: What To Know

NEW YORK CITY — Citywide trash rules goes into effect on Tuesday, requiring New Yorkers to contain their trash in bins with lids.
The new rule requires any building with between one and nine residential units to use trash bins that are 55 gallons or fewer, with secure lids, according to the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY)
Beginning on Jan. 2, DSNY will start imposing $50 fines for failure to comply with the new rules and for not using bins with tightly fitted lids. The fines can go as high as $200 for repeat offenders.

The mandate's aim is to reduce rat activity in the city and to keep streets cleaner — by preventing trash bags from being left outside.
In June 2026, all building owners will be required to purchase the official NYC Bin from the city.

The official trash bins are available for purchase at www.bins.nyc. The 35-gallon size bin costs $45 and $53 for the 45-gallon size bin.
A plan for buildings with over 10 residential units and those with over 30 units are still being finalized, according to the DSNY.
