NEW YORK — Get your motor running. New York is one of America's top road trip hotspots, a new report says — even though a majority of the Big Apple goes without a car.

The Empire State placed sixth on WalletHub's Monday list of the best states in the U.S. for summer road trips. The personal finance website ranked the 50 states on 33 indicators of road trip-worthiness in three categories: costs, safety and activities.

New York's abundance of attractions apparently helped put it near the top of the list despite its high costs, the report shows.

The state has the most historical sites and zoos and botanical gardens per capita and the third-most nightlife options per capita, according to WalletHub. But it also has the highest cost of living index and the third-highest price of a three-star hotel room at $144, the study found.

The Empire State is also pretty safe for road-trippers — WalletHub ranked it fourth for safety overall with top marks for vehicle miles traveled per capita and car thefts per 1,000 residents.

The state's high road-trip ranking comes despite the fact that 54.4 percent of New York City households didn't have a vehicle in 2016, according to Census data reported by Governing Magazine. The Big Apple's car-free rate is much higher than the state's other big cities, where fewer than 30 percent of households went without vehicles that year, the figures show.

New Yorkers seeking an out-of-state adventure could head south to North Carolina, which WalletHub named the nation's best summer road trip state.
