  1. More than 7,000 nurses ended a days-long strike on Thursday when union leaders struck a tentative agreement with Montefiore Bronx and Mount Sinai Hospital executives during nighttime negotiations. The agreement includes enforceable better staffing ratios and a wage increase at Montefiore. (New York City Patch)
  2. Nearly 2,700 New Yorkers died from drug overdoses in 2021, according to data released by the city on Thursday — just one day after advocates with VOCAL-NYC had sharply criticized the slow release of numbers. That's a 78 percent increase from just two years prior. Last year's figures were not included in the release. (New York City Patch)
  3. Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed tuition hikes of up to 3 percent annually at SUNY and CUNY colleges and universities for the first time since the start of the pandemic. They would go into effect in the fall, and have already received pushback from some students. (Gothamist)
  4. Mayor Eric Adams announced a $102.7 billion budget, that appears to be relatively 'bare-bones' without any new investments in government services. "The buck stops with me: it’s my responsibility to keep our city on a stable path," Adams said, anticipating arguments in favor of more spending. (New York City Patch)
  5. Slashings and stabbings inside city jails have increased greatly in the past several years, from 477 last year to 420 the year before, and just 40 in 2017, Department of Corrections records show. The news comes despite Mayor Eric Adams praising Corrections Commissioner Louis Molina following his first year on the job. Here's the prospective of four people on the front lines as to why the numbers have grown so high. (THE CITY)
